Understanding Why Military and Veteran Families Face Food Insecurity (22NUT004)

Description
It is a grim reality that many military and veteran service members who have defended our country struggle to feed their families. A study from the USDA found that veterans were 7.4% more likely to experience food insecurity than their civilian counterparts. Some of these issues are systemic, specifically the inclusion of the Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) into calculations of income for SNAP. Other barriers, such as social stigmas in the military can also discourage individuals from asking for help. There are efforts to alleviate these barriers, and proposed legislation that offer hope for a stronger, healthier future. Watch this webinar recording to understand the causes of persistent food insecurity in military and veteran households, resources available to these families, and important legislation that has the potential to better support them.
